I just bought this 2003 Cadillac DeVille and the service engine light came on. I had it read and it came back with secondary air injection system malfunction. Does anyone know what that means? And estimate repair cost?
Answer: The secondary are injection system pumps air into the exhaust during warm up to help the catalytic converter warm up faster and reduce emissions. The system consists of an computer controlled electric air pump, two air check valves, and related plumbing. It is not uncommon for water to inadvertently enter the air pump causing damage. There are a few different codes related to the secondary air system. Having the code will help narrow down which part of the system is at fault. If the problem is due to water intrusion there may be an updated air intake hose to help prevent the problem from reoccurring.
